The Mozilla Project
The project was founded in 1999 by Netscape Communication Corp. as an open-source organization to create the next generation browser. Mozilla, the browser product is called, was initially intended as the successor of Netscape Communicator 4 software. Overtime, the organization has evolved to encampass a wide range of developement tasks, including a complete new layout system called Gecko, a developement platform, a bug tracking system called Bugzilla, and many associated software.
The Mozilla Organization spun off the control of AOL Time Warner (parent of Netscape) when the Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded to oversee the entire project.
